Statement from Mr. Lew
Having been a 4th and 5th grade teacher here at Spring Valley Science School since 2016, I have had the unique opportunity of getting to work with Nine Studio for the majority of my teaching career. I appreciate Nine Studio’s overall mission of helping to educate students through the love of art, and am excited for our upcoming student art exhibition starting early June. Working on this project has been an excellent opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of the students at our school. Ethnically diverse, culturally rich, and academically focused, Spring Valley provides an authentic representation of what a San Francisco elementary public school truly is.
Our TK through 5th-grade elementary school has both a Chinese Bilingual and Spanish Bilingual program, and offers classes for students with special needs to help support the local community. The General Education program that I am a part of puts a heavy emphasis on building on the knowledge and experiences that the kids bring with them from home. Working with Nine Studio on this project over these past several weeks, I have witnessed how the students throughout our school have benefited from the unique opportunity to express what they know about the local community and culture through the hands-on experience of working in a professional art studio that is located just down the street.
The main theme of this year’s art exhibition mainly focuses on showcasing the natural beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area that serves as the backdrop for our school. Having survived the threat of our school potentially being closed due to budget cuts earlier in the school year, part of this event is a celebration of the rich history and culture of Spring Valley, as well as a look ahead for what is to come for the future of our school. As a teacher, it makes me proud to see what these students are able to come up with, as it is amazing to watch these students include their own distinct flair to what they are creating; something that is uniquely them both personally and culturally.
What excites me most about this year’s project is how it is student-focused, and designed to generate awareness of our school and the beautiful neighborhood it is located in. Dating back to its founding in 1852, Spring Valley Science School itself is one of the oldest schools in California, and remains a hidden gem in the middle of Nob Hill. My hope is that through our art exhibition with Nine Studio, this can be a platform where our school can begin to reach out and build genuine, long-lasting relationships with the wonderful people and local businesses in the area.
